They call it the “Melbourne Cup of the Outback” but a visit to the Birdsville Cup meeting is an experience that no racegoer will ever forget. Perched on the edge of the Simpson Desert near the Queensland-South Australian border, Birdsville is home to 120 residents but on the first Friday and Saturday in September, the town pays host to more than 6000 visitors. It’s a far cry from the first race meeting in 1882, when about 150 patrons attended. The carnival includes a 13-race program, with prize money of $200,000. Birdsville is one of 4 tracks in the state that run anti-clockwise. It’s no wonder, with visitors enjoying 2 days of quality outback racing and 3 nights of live entertainment that includes the Royal Flying Doctor Service Cocktail Party, fashions on the field, the famous Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe, charity auctions and a plethora of food and drink outlets. The Diamantina River behind the caravan park is a mecca for birdwatching. During the day, visitors can explore the Royal Hotel ruins, which doubled as a hospital from 1923 to 1937. The cemetery is also another place to check out. No wonder this won the Major Festival and Events category at the Outback Queensland and Tourism Awards.
